Welcome to POST 985

Founded on October 26, 1922, VFW Post 985 in Goshen has stood as a lasting tribute to the service and sacrifice of America’s Veterans. The Post was named in honor of its first commander, William A. Books, whose leadership and dedication helped establish a legacy of camaraderie, remembrance, and community that continues more than a century later. Though Commander Books served only one term, his impact remains woven into the identity and mission of the Post today.

The history of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) began decades earlier on September 29, 1899, when thirteen Spanish-American War Veterans gathered in a small tailor shop in Columbus, Ohio. These men came together not only to share stories of their service in Cuba, but to discuss how they could support wounded Veterans, care for the families of fallen service members, and advocate for those who had sacrificed for the nation.

From those humble beginnings grew one of the most respected and influential Veterans service organizations in the United States. The VFW became a driving force in securing benefits and protections many Veterans now consider fundamental. Before organizations like the VFW existed, combat Veterans often received little or no medical care for service-related injuries and illnesses, and there was virtually no expectation of compensation or long-term support.

The founders of the VFW challenged that reality. Their determination helped shape the future of Veteran advocacy in America by demanding that the nation honor its obligation to care for those who served in defense of freedom. Their efforts laid the groundwork for improvements in Veterans health care, disability compensation, survivor support, and countless other services that continue to benefit generations of Veterans and their families.

At VFW Post 985, that mission remains alive today. Beyond advocacy and service, the Post provides something equally important — a place where Veterans can gather, share stories, honor those who came before them, and preserve the memory of brothers and sisters in arms who are no longer with us. It is a place built on respect, fellowship, and remembrance.

For many Veterans, being remembered and appreciated for their service is one of life’s greatest honors. The members of VFW Post 985 remain committed to ensuring that no Veteran’s sacrifice is forgotten and that the legacy of those who served continues to inspire future generations.
